Focus on SINK (Sit Inside Kayaks) or Swim?

For paddling primarily in flatwater, you might want to focus on recreational Sit-Inside Kayaks (SINK).  SINKs or SIKs come in two basic styles, single (solo) kayaks or double (tandem) kayaks.  Focus on finding one that is stable, comfortable and has plenty of cockpit room.  Preferences for style may be based on your paddling personality.  Are you rather independent, like to go at your own speed and go where YOU want to go?  Then focus on purchasing a single or solo kayak.

Do you like to paddle with a partner or are you prone to bickering when on the water?  If you're paddle compatible, you can probably use a double kayak. Otherwise it might be smart to focus your purchase on two single kayaks instead of a tandem kayak to save your sanity, your friendship or possibly your marriage!
