The most important piece of equipment for either recreational kayaking or stand up paddleboarding, other than your kayak or paddleboard of course, is your paddle. Focus on getting a good paddle. Depending on your enthusiasm and stamina, you may have a paddle in your hands for hours on end. The heavier the kayak paddle is, the more difficult it will be to keep from tiring out. Some paddles may be cheaply made and the purchase of one would be a waste of your hard-earned cash. Keep in mind that most of the lighter weight, better quality kayak paddles are made of Kevlar composites or carbon fiber for the shaft (the part you'll be holding). Kayak paddles have two composite or injection molded blades (the parts that pull you through the water) fitted to them. Stand up paddleboard paddles are typically a carbon blade, shaft and "T" handle. Kevlar or composite kayak paddles usually cost quite a bit more than a paddle with a shaft made of aluminum. However, these lighter weight, more expensive kayak paddles tend to be more durable in the long run. Focus on quality for your kayak paddle or paddleboard paddles and you will spend your money wisely. Protect your paddles with paddle bags or paddle socks.
