Focus on Kayak Maintenance

If you've purchased a new kayak, you will like to keep it in good order.  Most kayaks come with manufacturer's suggestions as to care.  You should read those instructions and apply them.  However, there are some general common sense things to keep in mind to care for most kayaks.  Some basic maintenance tips for kayak care are as follows:

1.Sunscreen can damage any polycarbonate material used in a kayak.  When applying sunscreen to yourself or your companions you should try to slap it on before entering the kayak.
2.It's good form to rinse your feet/water shoes/sandals/jandals off before plopping your feet into the kayak.  Grit, gravel and sand can mar the interior of your kayak plus make it mighty uncomfortable if you happen to get any on your other gear or in your clothing.
3.One of the best ways to extend the useful life of your kayak or canoe is to keep it covered or stored inside when not in use.  Focus on where you will store your kayak or canoe.  Should you have to store your kayak outside, it's generally better to store it upside down to prevent water (and mosquitoes) from collecting in the craft.  Covering the kayak with a kayak cover or even a tarp will aid the maintenance process.  There are several good kayak storage racks on the market.  You might want to invest in one.
4.Washing a kayak or canoe after use is important, especially if you paddle in a saltwater environment.  Wash both the interior and exterior of the kayak with a mild solution of soapy water applied with a soft cloth or sponge.  Don't use abrasive cleaners or sharp cleaning instruments that might destroy the coating on the kayak.  Once washed, you can dry the kayak with a chamois or other soft rag or cellulose sponge.

Focus on routinely cleaning your kayak or canoe after each use and you will extend the life of your craft.
